This book takes a more fundamental, “first-principles” approach to the issue of dealing with random variability and uncertainty in engineering problems. As a result, for example, the treatment of probability distributions for random variables (Chapters 8–10) is based on a derivation of each model from phenomenological mechanisms, allowing the reader to see the subterraneous roots from which these probability models sprang. The reader is then able to see, for instance, how the Poisson model arises either as a limiting case of the binomial random variable, or from the phenomenon of observing in finitesized intervals of time or space, rare events with low probabilities of occurrence; or how the Gaussian model arises from an accumulation of small random perturbations.
